Contributed to research work conducted by the staff of the department in the following capacity

  • Worked as a research assistant for one year attached to Department of Padiatrics under Professor Priyani de Soyza and Professor Dulitha Fernando, from 1987 to 1988.
  • Conducted indepth interviews for study titled, “Epidemiological study of the elderly”, WHO assisted multi country study in South East Asia by Prof. S.R. De A. Seneviratne and Prof. Dulitha Fernando in 1989/1990.
  • Conducted indepth interviews for study titled “Developmental implications of aging,” UN multi country study, by Prof. S.R. De A. Seneviratne and Prof. Dulitha Fernando from 1991 to 1992.
  • Assisted in the research study titled, “A study of some factors influencing home accidents in children requiring hospitalization” by Dr. GATK Athauda, dissertation submitted by her as a requirement to complete her MSc in Community Medicine in December, 1991.
  • Assisted in the research study titled, “Some risk factors of acute Lower respiratory infections in children under five years of age” by Dr. Shyamali C. Menikgoda (MBBS), the dissertation submitted by her as a requirement to complete her MSc in Community Medicine in December, 1992.
  • Assisted in the research study titled, “Influence of low birth weight on the ‘developmental outcome’ of children in the first year of school” by Dr. Shyamali C. Dharmage, MBBS, MSc. Sri Lanka. The dissertation submitted by her as a requirement to complete her MD in Community Medicine in 1995.
  • Conducted Focus Groups Discussions for the study titled, “Distribution of iron supplement through the work place“ conducted by Prof. S R De A Seneviratne and Prof. Dulitha Fernando in 1999.
  • Conducted focus groups and indepth interviews for the study titled “Factors influencing operational issues for iron supplements for infants and young children“ conducted by Prof. L.C. Rajapaksa.
  • Conducted Focus Group Discussions for the study titled, “ Improvement of Undergraduate Medical Education & Training Programme to Address the Health Needs of the People and the Services“ by Professor Rohini De A. Seneviratne.

Training

  • Represented Dept. of Sociology, Sri Jayawardanapura University, at the Youth Camp held at Royal College, Polonnaruwa organized by Youth Affairs and Youth Employment Ministry and National Youth Services Council from 25-29 February 1984.
  • Pre service training programme for graduates conducted by the Department of Education, Sri Lanka held at the Sirimavo Bandaranayake Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo. from 27-12-1988 to 03-01-1989.
  • Workshop on Assessment and Analysis of Nutrition Problems (National Institute of Population Management) held at the Faculty of Medicine, Colombo from 02-11 December 1996.
  • Workshop on report writing organized by Staff Development Centre, University of Colombo on 03-12-2003.
  • Workshop on presentation skills organized by Staff Development Centre, University of Colombo from 10 – 12 December 2003.
  • Participate at a study tour to observe Community-Based Teaching Programmes, in India from 15 October to 5 November 2005.
  • Participate at Training Programme on Early detection of development impairments in children on 13 October 2010. Organized by the dept. of Community Medicine.

  • Participating in identifying communities and organizing the Community Attachment Programme for students commencing phase III in the Community Stream since 1995 to date.
  • Participating as a tutor for a group of 14 students, guiding them through the Community Attachment Programme, since 1995 to date. (Presently, AL 99 Batch, AL 2000 Batch, AL 2001 Batch).
  • Examiner at the following components of the Community Stream Assessment IV examination, since 2003 to date.

Family Attachment Programme

  • Responsible in identifying families and organizing the Family Attachment Programme for students commencing phase IV in the Community Stream since 1995 to date.
  • Participating as a tutor for students, guiding them through their Family Attachment Programme since 1995 to date. The following activities are conducted during this programme with tutor participation,
  • Examiner, at the following components of the Community Stream Assessment IV examination,

Service

  • Attends to social problems encountered in four clinical sessions conducted weekly by the staff of the Department of Community Medicine in the field practice area, Kotte.
  • Investigate and conduct medico-social work in the field practice area when such problems are brought to notice by the field workers or / students or at monthly conferences held at Health Centre, Kotte.
  • Carries out random field surveys (four per month) which helps the Department to monitor the field health programmes carried out in the field practice area, Kotte.
  • Responsible for collecting relevant statistics and preparing the Annual Health Report for the University Community Health Project, Kotte, since 1989 to date.

Other Activities

  • Responsible in organizing and co-ordinating the exhibition/ demonstration on services available for disabled persons for the Year five students following the Community Stream Programme. It’s a one day activity conducted by the Community Stream since 2000 to date.
  • Participated as a member of Faculty Board since October 2005.

  • Participated for Development of the Health Information system for the NIROGI Lanka project 01st January 2010.
  • Participated in the outreach programme on Health Promotion in the prevention of Non – communicable disease conducted by the NIROGI Lanka project on Thursday 18th March 2010 at the Moolai Cooperation Hospital and the Regional Training Center, Jaffna.
  • Participated in the organization and activities of the Educational staff conducted by the NIROGI Lanka project in commemoration of World Diabetes Day 2011 on Sunday 13th November 2011 at BMICH, Colombo.
  • Participated in the organization and activities at outreach programme on Saturday 24th October 2011 at Rajarata Maha Vidyalaya Polonnaruwa Organized by NIROGI Lanka project.
