Background:
Polycysticovary syndrome (PCaS) is the commonest endocrine disorder occurring in yonng women. There is a paucity of data onpcas among South Asian women.
Objectives:
To assess the prevalence, health care seeking behaviour, consequences and correlates of pcas, among commnnity-based women of reprod uctive age in Sri Lanka.
Methods:
A cross sectional study was carried out in 2005 in 4 Divisional Secretary (OS) areas in the district of Gampaha. A random sample of 3030 women aged 15-39 years were selected by probability proportionate to size, cluster sampling. An interviewer administered questionnaire was utilized to screen for ‘probable cases’ using menstrual history and clinicalfeatures of hyperandrogenism. ‘Probable cases’ nnderwent clinical examination, biochemical investigation and ovarian ultrasonnd scanning.The diagnostic criteria of 2003 were applied.
