Dilushi Wijayaratne<\/span><\/span> graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, Colombo in 2010 with First Class Honours, securing second place in Sri Lanka at the Final MBBS examination. She completed her MD (Medicine) in 2016 with outstanding performance and was board certified as a Specialist Nephrologist in 2020. In the same year, she joined the Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Colombo<\/span><\/span> as a lecturer and currently serves as a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Medicine. She also serves as an Honorary Consultant Nephrologist at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka<\/span><\/span> and the National Institute of Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation<\/span><\/span>, where she is actively involved in the management of complex kidney diseases, dialysis services, and renal transplantation care.<\/p>\nDr. Wijayaratne has demonstrated exceptional academic excellence from an early stage of her education. She achieved first place in Sri Lanka at the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination in the Biological Sciences stream and second place nationally at the G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination. During her undergraduate medical training, she received numerous distinctions and gold medals in Clinical Medicine, Medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Anatomy, Surgery, Parasitology, and Anaesthesia. Her outstanding achievements earned her the prestigious \u201cStudent of the Year\u201d award at the University of Colombo, recognizing not only her academic brilliance but also her leadership, sportsmanship, and exemplary character.<\/p>\n
Her postgraduate achievements further established her reputation as one of Sri Lanka\u2019s leading physician academics. She was awarded the Dr. John F. Stokes Gold Medal, the Dr. Nanda Amarasekera Award, and the Dr. Soma de Sylva Award for exceptional performance in postgraduate medicine examinations. She also obtained membership of the Royal College of Physicians<\/span><\/span> through the MRCP (UK) qualification and successfully completed the Nephrology Specialty Certificate Examination (SCE).<\/p>\nCommitted to advancing her expertise in clinical research and evidence-based medicine, Dr. Wijayaratne pursued postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford<\/span><\/span>, where she completed an MSc in Clinical Trials at the Nuffield Department of Population Health. She is currently pursuing a DPhil (Doctor of Philosophy) at Oxford, focusing on clinical and population health research related to kidney disease and patient care.<\/p>\nDr. Wijayaratne has made significant contributions to nephrology research and academic scholarship. She has authored and co-authored numerous publications in internationally recognized medical journals, including the American Journal of Kidney Diseases<\/em>, Kidney International Reports<\/em>, BMC Medical Education<\/em>, and the Indian Journal of Nephrology<\/em>. Her research interests include lupus nephritis, glomerular disease, chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury, dialysis, kidney transplantation, nephropathology, and patient-centered kidney care, particularly in low-resource settings. She has presented scientific papers and abstracts at leading international conferences, including the World Congress of Nephrology, meetings of the European Renal Association, and several major regional and global nephrology forums.<\/p>\nIn recognition of her research excellence, she has received multiple awards and commendations, including Senate Commendations for Research Excellence from the University of Colombo and the National Merit Award from the National Research Council of Sri Lanka. She has also received international grants and scholarships, including research support from the International Society of Nephrology<\/span><\/span> and the GlomCon Physician Scientist Scholarship programme.<\/p>\nBeyond her clinical and research achievements, Dr. Wijayaratne is deeply involved in medical education and mentorship. At the University of Colombo, she contributes extensively to undergraduate and postgraduate medical teaching, curriculum development, and clinical training. She serves as the Lead of the Emergency Medicine Module, has coordinated several academic programmes, and functions as an examiner for Final MBBS examinations. She is also actively engaged in mentoring medical students and postgraduate trainees through both local and international educational initiatives, including NephSIM and GlomCon Fellowship programmes.<\/p>\n
Dr. Wijayaratne is internationally recognized for her contributions to digital medical education and academic communication. She has played important roles within the International Society of Nephrology, including serving on its social media and educational teams, where she contributes to visual abstracts, tweetorials, educational webinars, video abstracts, and online nephrology education initiatives. Her work in digital scholarship has helped improve global dissemination of nephrology knowledge and educational resources.<\/p>\n
In addition to her academic and professional accomplishments, she has demonstrated excellence in leadership and extracurricular activities throughout her life. During her school years at St. Bridget\u2019s Convent<\/span><\/span>, she served as Deputy Head Prefect and achieved national recognition in Scrabble and music. At university level, she represented and captained the University of Colombo women\u2019s tennis team and received university sports colours on multiple occasions.<\/p>\nThrough her outstanding achievements in clinical medicine, nephrology, research, education, leadership, and international collaboration, Dr. Dilushi Wijayaratne has established herself as one of Sri Lanka\u2019s most accomplished physician academics and a highly respected contributor to the global nephrology community.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
