Professional Achievements And Activities

  • 2009     Appointed as a National Technical Assessor for Medical Laboratory Accreditation by the Sri Lanka Accreditation Board for Conformity Assessment (as per Act No. 32 of 2005 – Section 25. SLAB is the National Accreditation Authority of Sri Lanka, which is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Science and Technology).
  • 2008     Qualified as a Consultant in Medical Laboratory Accreditation (ISO 15189)
  • 2007     Appointed as the convenor Colombo task force of the National coordinating committee for Reproductive Health Research, WHO
  • 2004     Embryologist  of the local team who produced the First baby in Sri Lanka with testicular   sperm aspiration  (TESA) and ICSI
  • 2003     Embryologist  of the local team who produced the First baby in Sri Lanka with intra- cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
  • 2003     Produced first baby in Sri Lanka with frozen thawed embryos
  • 2002     Embryologist of the  local team of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) experts who produced the  First test tube (IVF) baby  in Sri Lanka with conventional IVF procedure
  • 2002      Established the first state-of- the art sperm bank in the country
  • 2001      The first local embryologist who pioneered in establishing Advanced assisted   Reproduction Technologies in Sri Lanka. The first IVF baby produced by the total Sri  Lankan team conceived this year.
  • 1998      Established the first state- of-art IVF laboratory in the country
  • 1994      Established the first Reproductive Biology laboratory in the country at the Department   of obstetrics & Gynaecology Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo
  • 1985      Established four major laboratories in the country (Laboratories of Sri Jayewardenepura    General Hospital, National Diabetes Centre, Faculty of Medicine Colombo and Vindana   Reproductive Health Centre)

Other Activities

  • Establishment of the Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology Laboratory; established the Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology  Laboratory in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Faculty of  Medicine, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka in 1994 with funds colleted from well wishes and the funds for laboratory infra structure development from the university.  Major equipment worth of over 20 million was obtained by negotiating with the foreign principles.
  • As the Lecturer in-charge of this Reproductive Biology laboratory of the University of  Colombo since Its inception (in May 1994 to date) I was totally responsible for smooth  functioning and delivering quality laboratory services for teaching, research and patient  Care.
  • This Laboratory which consist of three different laboratories namely:
  • Clinical Chemistry
  • Andrology
  • Endocrinology/ Immunology
  • Reproductive Biology laboratory of this department  is the only one of its kind in Sri Lanka. This was developed as an entirely new concept in the Faculty of Medicine Colombo and in the whole university system. Services and maintenance of the laboratory is carried out in a cost recovery basis, without any financial burden to the university.
  • At present this laboratory caters to around over 30,000 patients per year and also provides backup support for teaching and research and patient care activities carried out by the Obstetrics & Gynaecology professorial unit. The services of these laboratories are also extended to other departments and faculties for their clinical and research work. Post graduate students following the Diploma in Pathology also use the laboratory to learn the range of investigations in different fields and their techniques. Several post graduates (PhD, DM,  MPhil & MSc) carried out the entire laboratory component of their research projects in this laboratory. These post graduate research projects included both human and animal experiments.  
  • Contributed to Curriculum development of the Faculty of Medicine, Colombo Participated in curriculum development programme since 1996 by being a  Member of the committees on curriculum development in Reproductive Health  Module, Nutrition Module the Clinical Sciences stream and the Skills Development
  • Trained students in laboratory work particularly related to Andrology who registered for post graduate degrees. I have also trained technical officers, scientists or medical officers to establish new laboratories.
  • Successful in Obtaining ISO 15189 accreditation to a Reproductive Health laboratory in the private sector functioning under my supervision. This is the first Reproductive Health laboratory consisting of Andrology, Endocrinology and Clinical Chemistry to achieve the ISO 15189 standard.
  • I am also in the process of preparing documents and training laboratory personnel at the Reproductive Biology laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine to obtain ISO 15189 standard.
  •  Contributed as a resource person in many hands-on workshops (laboratory based) panel discussions, seminars, media (print & television) programmes /discussions. Followed / participated various courses/ training programmes etc for self / academic development
