Prof. Madhubhashinee Dayabandara qualified in Medicine from the University of Colombo in 2002. She subsequently undertook her clinical training in Psychiatry in Sri Lanka and Australia. She is currently a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo. She is an undergraduate and postgraduate trainer in Psychiatry.

Prof. Dayabandara also works as a Consultant Psychiatrist in the University Psychiatry Unit of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka. This Unit provides general adult, addiction, old age and liaison psychiatry services to the largest tertiary care hospital in Sri Lanka, five adjacent tertiary care institutions and the surrounding catchment area.

She combines teaching with basic and clinical investigative research in the areas of major psychiatric illnesses: schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder and suicide. She has received funding from the University of Colombo. She has published in international and local journals. Her current research project focuses on the clinical and functional outcome of schizophrenia in Sri Lankan setting.
