Dr. Shamila Dawood is a senior lecturer currently affiliated with the Department of Commercial Law at the University of Colombo. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane, Australia, a Master of Laws degree in International Public Law from the University of Oslo in Norway, and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka. She is also an Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. Dr. Dawood has received the Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education (CTHE) and the Diploma in Commercial Arbitration from the ICLP in Colombo. She teaches subjects such as International Investment Law, Business Law, Contract Law, and Legal Methods at the undergraduate level, and she is involved in teaching and supervising PhD and Master’s thesis students.
Dr. Dawood serves as the Director of the English Legal Unit, which was established by the Faculty of Law to enhance the bilingual teaching system at the undergraduate level. She also holds the position of Senior Treasurer at the Muslim Majlis of the University of Colombo. Furthermore, she acts as the Coordinator for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree program in the Faculty of Law and as the Course Director for the LLM programs in Fundamental of Commercial Law, Company Law, and International Business Law. Dr. Dawood has served as a visiting lecturer, examiner, and resource person in various law teaching institutions and centers. She has also been a part of several editorial boards and has served as a reviewer for numerous local and international journals. Additionally, she is a member of the pre-legislative committee of the University of Colombo.
Her research interests revolve around sustainable development and foreign investment, international trade and business, consumer protection, environment, and minority rights. Dr. Dawood has published several articles in both local and international journals and other publications. In addition to her academic work, she actively participates in community-related empowerment projects on a voluntary basis.
