Prof. Fareena Ruzaik entered the University of Peradeniya, read for a Special Degree in Geography, and graduated with a BA Hons. Second Class Upper Division in 1994.
Prof. Fareena Ruzaik joined the Dept. of Geography, University of Colombo as a Permanent Lecturer in 2005. Prior to that, from 1994 to 1999, she worked at the Dept. as an Assistant Lecturer. Her experience in the Central Environmental Authority, during the period from 1999 to 2005, has added more value to her academic activities in the University. She has more than 20 years of experience in environmental-related activities including teaching-related subjects. In addition, she has organized and coordinated multiple programs and events (seminars, conferences, post-graduate diplomas, etc.) for undergraduates and post-graduate students.
She served as the Secretary of the Sri Lanka Association of Geographers (SLAG) from 2005 to 2019. At present, she is the Secretary of the Ethics Review Committee for Social Sciences and Humanities (ERCSSH), Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo. Since 2019, she has published many articles and books in the field of Medical Geography.
She has been serving as a resource person, contributing to various TV, radio programs and newspaper articles to educate the public on issues related to environmental health and management in Sri Lanka.
Considering the requirement of the department, she has introduced two course units namely; Medical Geography and Applied Medical Geography for the undergraduate (special degree) students in all three (Sinhala, Tamil and English) mediums.
