Dr. Mythily Aravinthan

Dr Mythily Aravinthan is a lecturer in Clinical Medicine in the Department of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, and is currently working as a Registrar in General Medicine at Flinders Medical Centre, South Australia. She graduated with an MBBS from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, in 2016 and completed her MD in Medicine at the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo, in 2022. Her postgraduate specialist training provided broad clinical exposure across internal medicine and several subspecialties, including neurology, rheumatology, nephrology, endocrinology, respiratory medicine, intensive care, gastroenterology, psychiatry and cardiology.
Her academic career at the University of Colombo began in 2016 as a Temporary Demonstrator in the Department of Pharmacology. Since February 2024, she has served as a Lecturer in Clinical Medicine, contributing to ward-based teaching, undergraduate lectures, small-group discussions, clinical case discussions and training in basic clinical and procedural skills. She has also contributed to undergraduate teaching in emergency medicine and simulated clinical settings during her postgraduate training at the University Medical Unit, National Hospital of Sri Lanka.
Dr Aravinthan has a sustained interest in clinical research, particularly in demyelinating disorders of the central nervous system. Since 2017, she has been involved in the Sri Lanka–Mayo Clinic collaborative project and registry of demyelinating disorders in Sri Lanka, contributing to studies on their epidemiology, clinical features and outcomes. Her research experience also includes multiple sclerosis, MOG-IgG-associated disorders, AQP4-IgG-associated neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder, acute coronary syndrome, COVID-19, maternal health, medical humanities and other areas of internal medicine. She has participated as a sub-investigator in multicentre clinical trials, including TRIDENT and INTERACT, and has been involved in observational studies, clinical audits and scientific writing.

Her scholarly work includes peer-reviewed publications and conference contributions in neurology, general medicine, infectious diseases, endocrinology and renal medicine. Her publications have appeared in journals including Heart, Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry, Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders, SAGE Open Medical Case Reports and Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism Case Reports. Her recent academic work includes a clinical audit on the timeliness of physiotherapy referrals and reviews in patients presenting after falls, presented at the SAAIM Annual Conference in March 2026.

She is committed to clinical excellence, evidence-based practice, medical education and research, with a particular interest in advancing the understanding and management of neurological and general medical disorders. She is registered with the Sri Lanka Medical Council and is an Associate Member of the Sri Lanka College of Internal Medicine.
