Dr Nilesh Fernandopulle, (MBBS, MD, FCCP, FRCP, Specialty Certificate in Gastroenterology UK, PG Certificate on Medical Education) is a Senior lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine Colombo and Honorary Consultant Gastroenterologist at the University Surgical Unit, National Hospital of Sri Lanka. He received his local training in Gastroenterology at the Sri Jayawardena pura General Hospital and later had his foreign training as a Senior Clinical Fellow at John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford University Hospitals. Later he received the Annual (2013) Scholarship of the Japanese Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (JSGE), to train in advanced therapeutic endoscopy, at the Kyoto Prefectural University Japan.

He has been a board-certified Consultant Gastroenterologist since 2013, and has held posts as Consultant Gastroenterologist, Teaching hospital Jaffna and Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge before he assumed duties at the present unit in July 2017.

His special interests are in Luminal Gastroenterology and Advanced therapeutic endoscopy and has performed successful endoscopy procedures including, over 75 Per-oral endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) for achalasia cardia, over 200 Endoscopic sub mucosal resections for large early GI neoplasia, Sub mucosal Tunnel endoscopic resections, Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) guided diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, therapeutic ERCP including per oral cholangioscopy and Bariatric gastric balloon placements, some of these for the first time in Sri Lanka.

He has presented and published his work in therapeutic endoscopy and luminal gastroenterology in local and international conferences and peer reviewed journals and has coauthored more than 50 publications and over 75 abstracts. He has also co-authored 4 book chapters on topics related to his field.

He was Head Prefect and College Badminton Captain of his Alma Mater St Joseph’s College Colombo and there after during his under graduate career at the Faculty of Medicine Colombo, he received Sri Lanka University Colors in Badminton and Tennis, and was Vice President and Faculty Board Student representative of the  Medical Faculty Students Union, before completing his MBBS with Second class honors with a distinction in Clinical Medicine.
