Dr Sisira Pathirana graduated from the Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya with Second Class Honors in 1991 and completed the Ph D in medical Parasitology and Immunology from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo in 1998.  He Joined the Department of Parasitology in 1999 after completing Post-doctoral training in University of Edinburgh, UK.  He is currently the Convener of the Infectious and Parasitic Diseases Module of the undergraduate medical curriculum, a member of the Committees for Research Promotion and Facilitation Center, Rural Health Research Center and Animal House.  In addition, he Coordinate the Master of Science programme of Cellular and Molecular Immunology of the Institute of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, University of Colombo.  He has also contributed as an examiner of the postgraduate programmes of the IBMBB and PGIM of the University of Colombo.  Dr Pathirana was the Deputy Coordinator/ Coordinator of the World Bank funded IRQUE project of the Faculty of Medicine and the Coordinator of the University Development Grant of the HETC project for the University of Colombo. He was a member of the Research and Higher Degrees Committee of the Faculty of Medicine from year 2009 till 2012.

Dr Pathirana has 10 publications in peer-reviewed journals to date and numerous abstracts.  He has supervised and supervises a few M Sc, M Phil and Ph D students. He has received a number of Presidential Awards for scientific research and award for the Best Paper Presented for numerous research communications.
