Dr. Ushani Wariyapperuma

Dr. Ushani Wariyapperuma graduated with Second Class Honours from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, in 2010. She completed her Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Internal Medicine in 2017 and was board-certified as a Specialist in Internal Medicine in 2019. She obtained the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom (MRCP-UK) in 2020 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP), United Kingdom, in 2025. She also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education (PGCert MedEd). Dr Wariyapperuma is a member of the American College of Physicians, the Ceylon College of Physicians, and the Sri Lanka College of Internal Medicine.

Dr Wariyapperuma joined the Department of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, as a Senior Lecturer in 2025 and serves concurrently as an Honorary Consultant Physician at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka. Her clinical practice encompasses general internal medicine, with particular expertise in the management of patients undergoing chemotherapy and the comprehensive care of patients before and after haematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Prior to her current appointment, Dr Wariyapperuma was a founding academic member of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Moratuwa, where she held several academic leadership and administrative positions. She played a pivotal role in establishing the Faculty’s integrated, competency-based undergraduate medical curriculum and contributed extensively to curriculum design, assessment development, faculty development, educational innovation, and institutional research capacity building. She has substantial experience in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, academic assessment, and research supervision, and continues to contribute to postgraduate physician training as a member of the organising committee for the MRCP (PACES) Examinations in Sri Lanka.

Her research focuses primarily on infectious diseases in immunocompromised patients, particularly those receiving chemotherapy and patients undergoing haematopoietic stem cell transplantation, with an emphasis on early diagnosis, risk stratification, supportive care, and improving clinical outcomes. She also has active research interests in medical education, including simulation-based learning, curriculum innovation, and technology-enhanced teaching and learning.

Dr Wariyapperuma has published extensively in peer-reviewed national and international journals and has authored invited review articles, book chapters, and educational resources in internal medicine. She serves as a reviewer and editorial contributor for scientific journals and regularly participates as an invited speaker, examiner, course coordinator, and resource person in national and international academic programmes. She is also a member of the Committee on Ethics, Governance, and Research Integrity of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Sri Lanka, contributing to the promotion of research governance, ethical conduct, and scientific integrity.
