Dr. Probhodana Ranaweera graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo in 2005 with a Second Class (Upper Division) at the final MBBS Exam with Distinctions in Clinical medicine, Paediatrics, Psychological Medicine, Parasitology and Microbiology. His exemplary performance during the final MBBS exam was awarded with 6 Gold Medals; The Sir Andrew Caldecott Gold Medal for the best performance in Final MBBS, Joseph Nalliah Arumugam Memorial Award for Final MBBS, Professor K. Dharmadasa Gold Medal for Clinical Medicine, Dr. D de S. Muthukumarana Memorial Prize for Medicine and Dr. Alaric Jayasingha Memorial Gold Medal in Paediatrics.

After graduating from the faculty, he started his internship at De Soysa Maternity hospital and continued at National Hospital of SriLanka. He embarked on service as a Medical Officer of Anaesthesiology at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital. After passing Part I he started his career in obstetrics and gynaecology as a Registrar at the Teaching Hospital Mahamodara and the De Soysa Maternity Hospital. He served as a Senior Registrar at the Professorial Unit of Colombo South Teaching Hospital. He spent two years in the United Kingdom at Whipps Cross university Hospital where he completed his postgraduate training.  During this time, he became a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecology. After returning to Sri Lanka he was appointed as the acting consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at District General Hospital Kilinochchi. Dr.Probhoadana Ranaweera joined the Faculty of Medicine University of Colombo in 2016 as a lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

He received the Shan S.Ratnam-Young Gynaecologist Award (SSR-YGA) to the XXIII Asia & Oceania Federation of Obstetrics & Gynaecology in 2013.

He has completed International Inter-university Diploma in Benign Gynaecological Endoscopic Surgery from University of Auvergne, France. He works as a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist since 2015.  He also received Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education from University of Colombo, with accreditation by Staff and Education Development Association of The United Kingdom (SEDA-UK) in 2016.

He is a preceptor for postgraduate trainees in Obstetrics & Gynaecological Clinical teaching and has mentored postgraduate trainees at Whippps Cross University Hospital. He is currently involved in being a medical educator for undergraduates and post graduate trainees in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

He has many publications in index, peer reviewed journals and has authored many book chapters on Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He has received awards for best oral presentations of research abstracts.  During his career in the faculty he was appointed as the convener of the Language Centre and now holds the Chair to the same centre. Being a compassionate doctor, he introduced a special programme to provide support to bereaving mothers, which was launched in June 2019 as ’Rose bud service’’  at the professorial unit of De Soysa Maternity Hospital.

Dr. Ranaweera also works as an honorary Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist attached to the De Soysa Maternity Hospital for Women and National Hospital of Sri Lanka.

His special interests are medical disorders complicating pregnancy especially heart disease. He is also interested in minimal access surgery for benign gynaecological conditions.  He is a quintessential medical professional, researcher and an educator who is working with a vision towards ensuring respectful medical care to women throughout their life.
