Anusha Sivalingam is a lecturer in the Department of Mass Media at the University of Colombo and a visiting lecturer at the Universities of Peradeniya and Jaffna. With extensive professional experience across Sri Lanka’s national television and print media in Sinhala, Tamil, and English, she has also contributed as a researcher at the Centre for Poverty Analysis (CEPA).
A prolific translator and scholar, Anusha has published seven major literary translations, including poetry, that engage profoundly with themes of human rights, peacebuilding, and transitional justice in Sri Lanka. Her translation of Tara Shyamali Kumaraswamy (Tamil) received both the State Literary Award and the Godage Literary Award in 2019. That same year, her research work Sri Lankan Effort in Tamil Cinema was shortlisted for the State Literary Awards. In 2024, her poetry translation Rathriya Matha Rathu Kurullek Lagagena (Sinhala) was nominated for Best Poetry Translation at the State Literary Awards, recognized for its searing exploration of war crimes, loss, disappearances, and the resilience and hope of victims.Through her work, Anusha demonstrates how translation can serve as a powerful instrument for fostering intercommunal understanding, advancing cultural dialogue, and reinforcing justice.
In addition to her scholarly pursuits, she is an accomplished freelance copywriter in advertising, a scriptwriter, and a contributor to award-winning Tamil and Sinhala films in Sri Lanka, where she has penned songs and engaged in creative development, including work toward a doctorate in scriptwriting. Anusha Sivalingam’s career exemplifies the fusion of Human rights activism, journalism, creative expression, and social impact, positioning her as a leading voice in Sri Lankan media, literature, and film studies.
