Among family members’ different explanations and meanings on MHPs, 16.6% of family members (FMS) identified their members’ behavioural problems as ‘mental illnesses’ to be treated. In addition, FMs perceived such behaviours as possessions, neurological problems, psychological shocks, stubbornness, and adjustment reactions. Identification of peoples’ social and cultural perception on mental health problems generates a culturally sensitive and locally accepted treatment background in Sri Lanka. This will also help to reduce the stigma among people.
