Mr. Vaithulla Kamal Ahamed is a Lecturer (Probationary) at the Department of Private and Comparative Law of the Faculty of Law. He was called to the Bar in February 2018, following the completion of an LL.B Degree with Second Class (Hons.) Upper Division from the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo in 2016. Prior to entering academia, he served as a Legal Research Officer (Judicial Clerk) at the Court of Appeal of Sri Lanka.
Before his tenure at the Court of Appeal, Kamal practiced as a private legal practitioner. Driven by a persistent pursuit of knowledge, he undertook further studies, earning a Post Graduate Diploma in Diplomacy and World Affairs from the Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute (BIDTI), and an Advanced Diploma in Transitional Justice from the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BCIS).
Expanding upon his LL.B foundation, Kamal completed an LL.M in Criminal Justice Administration from the Open University of Sri Lanka. His LL.M thesis explored into the pressing issue of Wrongful Prosecution and Miscarriage of Justice in the Sri Lankan Criminal Justice Administration, proposing a comprehensive legal framework to address these challenges within the Sri Lankan legal system.
In his teaching capacity, Kamal teaches a variety of courses, including Legal Method and Legal Writing, Evidence and Criminal Procedure, Family Law, and the Law of Delict, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His research interests intersect with Civil Procedure, the Law of Delict, and the evolving landscape of Evidence Law. Kamal consistently demonstrates a keen interest in analysing case law and judicial trends within the Sri Lankan legal system, as well as in other legal systems.
