CMI 5010 – Overview of the Immune System

  • Introduction to the immune system, innate and adaptive immunity, general properties of the immune responses, introduction to cellular and molecular immunology.

CMI 5020 – Molecular Immunology

  • Molecules of the immune system – components taught
  • immunoglobulin structure and function
  • organization and expression of immunoglobulin genes, B-cell Receptor, co-receptors & other immune cell surface receptors, members of the Ig gene superfamily,
  • production & applications of monoclonal antibodies, antibody cloning and engineering
  • Antigens, immunogenicity vs antigenicity, factors that influence immunogenicity, antigenic determinants, T and B cell epitopes, haptens

2000-Jan 2005: Contributed to the teaching within the new curriculum at the Faculty of Medicine, teaching in two Streams (Behavioral Sciences and Community Studies) as a facilitator for their small group discussions. Contributed in preparing Fixed Learning Modules on Diagnostic methods and Pathogenesis of Malaria.

1991-2004: Teaching under-graduate, medical students in Parasitology, conducted tutorials, seminars and practical classes for 3rd year medical students on malarial parasites and other blood & tissue parasites.

  • 2002- Establishment of short-term/continuous falciparum malarial cultures, in vitro assays and in vivo P. berghei model for malaria for testing anti-malarial activities of natural (plant) product as a collaborative study with Dr Preethi Randeniya and ProfW D Ratnasooriya
  • 1995-2002- Research studies at the MRU on 1) pre-clinical testing of malaria vaccine candidate antigensm, 2) falciparum and P. vivax resistance to anti-malarial drugs, 3) immuno-epiedemiological studies on malaria vaccine candidate antigens, 4) studies on parasite genetic polymorphism and 5) parasitological & entomological studies in preparation of field clinical trials for malaria vaccines.
